One of the SVD Australia Province’s newer missions is Myanmar, where Divine Word Missionaries have been working since 2018 at the invitation of Cardinal Charles Bo SDB, the Archbishop of Yangon, to promote the Bible Apostolate.
Since arriving, the SVD have also been involved with parish ministry, helping meet the material needs and education of the people by undertaking social projects, including building houses for the poor and needy, and providing music and computer classes for local children and out-of-school youth. In April 2025, the SVD was given the pastoral care of a newly formed parish.
The SVD presence in Myanmar began in August 2017 when Fr Truc Quoc Phan SVD and Fr John Le SVD began work to make the structure that the Society had been given liveable.
Fr Jacob Kavunkal SVD, the first of the four member team appointed by the SVD Generalate, arrived in March 2018 and started to work giving Bible retreats, classes, animation talks and teaching English.
Currently there are three members in ministry in Myanmar, Fr Tuyen, Fr Deva and Fr Roger.
Fr Tuyen SVD was initially working with the marginalised in the far-flung villages under Sacred Heart Parish, Hmawbi. Under his watchful care, houses have been built for the poor and the needy; music and computer classes are conducted for the children and out-of-school youth. Chapels have either been built or renovated.
Fr Deva SVD's ministry involves spiritual, psychological and educational spheres in and around the archdiocese of Yangon. He is the spiritual director, counselor and one of the formators and lecturers at the National Catholic Institute of Theology and seminary. He is also involved in the formation of the Carmelite Sisters. His other ministry includes adult formation in the form of retreats and recollections.
Fr Roger SVD is the first SVD from Myanmar to be ordained and when he was first assigned to his home country as a missionary he was assisting Fr Tuyen in Sacred Heart Parish.
In April 2025, Fr Tuyen was appointed parish priest of the newly established parish at Annunciation of the Lord Church in Kone Ka Lay village, Htantabin Township, approximately a 45-minute drive from the SVD house in Hmawbi, with Fr Roger as assistant priest.
